The Load-Bearing Smile

My grin is an adaptation;
it's how I stay alive.
And due to positive side effects,
everything around me thrives.
But when your happiness is a light
any darkness is blamed on you.
Your upturned lip no longer optional
even when you're feeling blue.
Your feelings matter until they don't.
Your heart treasured until it hurts.
"Who is this other person?" they ask
as their systems switch to alert.
"I can't have this conversation now.
I'm afraid you'll have to wait.
Nevermind how much turmoil lies within
schedule this for a later date."
That appointed time will never come
(or at least not soon enough to matter).
Best to grit your teeth and bear it
or your entire world will shatter.
