The Realm of the Probable

Tomorrow is never guaranteed,
yet it appears highly likely.
So we plan ahead anyway
clutching our narrative tightly.
I'm sure you've heard the excuse:
"It just has to be that way."
Spoken as if self-evident
and there is nothing else to say.
But there is no cosmic rule
that everything must go on.
We could simply set it aside
and refuse to be history's pawn.
People don't have to fight.
Debts need not be collected.
Yesterday's kingdom is no more
but it keeps on getting elected.
